News from Home: The Films of Chantal Akerman - TIFF Wavelengths programmer Andréa Picard and longtime Akerman collaborator Claire Atherton curate this tribute to the late Belgian master, whose work has become a cornerstone of cinematic modernism, minimalism, and feminism. Some directly address the issue of exile and displacement, such as Jonas Mekas’s As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty. Directed by Chantal Akerman, 2002 .

She was a famous film director who decided to take up the profession when she saw Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le Fou. Chantal Akerman was supported by André Delvaux when she made her first film, Saute ma ville (1968), and she herself became a major influence for many other film directors, including Chantal Akerman Charles Baudelaire Charles Bukowski Comte de Lautreamont Constance DeJong Cy Twombly Danny Lyon David Tibet Deborah Curtis Eliphas Levi Eric Paul Genesis Breyer P … Akerman made two versions - one in English and one in French - which should perhaps not surprise us since she, more than many film artists, has one foot in the New York of Michael Snow, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol and the other in the Europe of André Delvaux, Jean-Luc Godard and Rainer Werner Fassbinder (all mentioned and discussed by Akerman at various times). Home Movies will be presented in Pōneke at Enjoy and will include films by Jonas Mekas, Chantal Akerman, Moyra Davey, and will close with Agnès Varda's The Beaches of Agnès (2008), in honour of her significant contribution to cinema and art.
